Experiencing Onam Of The 1960's

Onam is the state festival of Kerala. It is a yearly tribute paid to Lord Mahabali whose rule had gifted the land a golden era during time immemorial. Devas were jealous of the good rule by Mahabali who belonged to their archrivals, Asuras. Consequently, the magnanimous King was pushed down to the nether world by Vamana, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Mahabali was granted a permission to emerge from the underworld and visit his people once in a year. On Thiruvonam, the main Onam day, it is believed that the King Mahabali makes an invisible visit to watch the welfare of his people. In and out of Kerala, people of the State make the occasion exceptionally celebrative to please their beloved King.
